Family Care

Individuals in many families take on the responsibility for caring for and supporting a dependent older relative. Those who provide this care  are called a "family carers" whether they be spouses, children friends, siblings of the older person.

The kind of care provided
  • Everyday needs (cleaning, shopping, food preparation, help with mobility in and outside the home, personal care , showering etc)
  • Economic (paying bills, buying medicines, food, and other expenses)
  • Emotional (company and conversation)
The needs of family carers
  • Information about services for the older person
  • Education and training in caring
  • Information about medical matters
  • Help in programming time and future care
  • Economic support
  • Respite support
  • Psychological support and counselling and opportunities to express fears
  • Help in finding work
  • More free time

The only bodies providing counseling and support to family carers are those concerned with Alzheimer: these are:

The Alzheimer and associated diseases Association Athens: this operates day care centre for those with dementia/Alzheimer.
Hellenic Gerontological and Geriatric society – the Pyschogeriatric Association «Nestor», based in Athens, which also runs a day care centre and other facilities
Greek Association for Alzheimer and related diseases, based in Thessaloniki with a number of branches on many towns and cities. See  link

Another possible source of help (and many doctors do speak English) concerning care can be found on the site of the Aiginition Hospital, Athens – The University of Athens Psychiatric Clinic
